Meditation: The Ultimate Experience

Find meaning, purpose and fulfilment in your life and in the world through the age-old science of meditation.

Do you feel helpless to see how world events are unfolding without being able to do anything about them? In other words, do you find yourself saying WTF way too much than you should? Are you overwhelmed by information overload… the sheer volume of data we have to process each day… its complexity… its ambiguity? Do you feel there’s something not quite right with the world? With increasing addictions of various sorts, crime, violence, socio-economic injustice, terrorism, war. Do you feel stressed, anxious, fearful, alone, disconnected, depressed? But at the same time have a longing for connectedness, inspiration and greatness? Are you feeling bad about the apparent meaningless of life in our world and in our society?

Well, remember that there is a meaning, purpose and mission to your life. Some people say that there is no purpose, no rhyme or reason, that it’s all random and that there’s no meaning to our lives other than what we find in our interpersonal relationships. And then when we die that’s it, nothing more. But I’m here to tell you that there is a deeper meaning, a profound purpose, a higher mission to our lives as human beings — as spiritual beings — on this planet. And that we are all here to fulfil that mission: both personally as well as socially.

Why am I so sure about this? It comes from the teachings of my guru, from my own personal experience, and from the experience of yogis for thousands of years, from a rich legacy of yoga and its philosophy and practice.

According to the yogic philosophy, this universe is the manifestation of one existence, one being, one consciousness. Everything and everyone is an expression of that one consciousness: the Cosmic Consciousness, the Infinite Consciousness. And just like everything and everyone else, you too are part of that Infinite Consciousness. In fact, you are not only part of it but one with it. Like a wave is one with the sea. A wave has its own individual existence but it also has its greater existence as one with the sea. In the same way, you have your individual existence and you also have your greater existence. Your own consciousness is one with the Infinite Consciousness. Your own self is one with the Greater Self. Your own being is one with the Greater Being, the Cosmic Being. We are all one with the Cosmic Consciousness. We just don’t know it.

In the words of one spiritual commentator, “We’re all enlightened — we’re just too dumb to realise it!”

That’s a funny way of saying it, but it’s true. We are it but we don’t know it. We have to know it. We have to realise it. We have to realise our oneness with the Cosmic Oneness, our Greater Self.

If you can realise yourself as the Greater Self; the Greater Self as your own self; that’s self-realisation. Self-realisation means self-fulfilment in the deepest possible sense; the fulfilment of our deepest desire, our longing for the Infinite. It’s the ultimate experience.

And the essence of that experience is the highest love; infinite happiness; perfect peace and contentment; bliss. That bliss is within you as the essence of your deepest self. As such it’s our deepest desire. It’s what we want more than anything else. What you ultimately want is your inner you. So it’s inevitable that you will attain what you’re ultimately looking for. It’s a self-fulfilling prophesy for each and every one of us. We are all on a journey to realising that ultimate goal of eternal bliss. It’s the journey of returning back to our source, like a raindrop returns to the earth, like a river flows to the sea. We’re remembering a long-lost memory, reclaiming our lost identity: our deepest selves.

You can attain fulfilment. You only need manifest the Divinity within you to be free. Life is meaningful. It has a purpose. It has a goal: a higher love, a higher truth, a higher state of being.

But you’ve got to be proactive to attain that goal. You have to take action. You have to be brave. Fortune favours the brave. Be brave. Be one of the lucky ones who finds the path, walks it and wins the prize. As Yogi Berra said, “If you come to a fork in the road, take it!” In today’s world a winner is seen as one who achieves material and social success. But a real winner is one who attains spiritual success: who avails oneself of the spiritual path, who goes forth and conquers the inner world of the mind while serving the outer world with the love in their heart.

Being spiritually proactive means spiritual practice: sadhana, the effort to complete oneself. It means to look within yourself for the infinite source of peace and love that lies within; to feel the bliss of your being as the essence of all being.

This is not just belief. It’s science. Spiritual science. The science of yoga. The practice of yoga. The yogic lifestyle, with meditation at its core.

Meditation means to close your eyes and feel yourself as the Greater Self; transcend yourself into the Greater Self and become great. It expands our sense of self beyond our everyday awareness into the realm of the mystical.

Yogis have been doing that for thousands of years, practicing meditation and realising the benefits of that practice. So we know it works. Personally I can tell you that it’s transformed my life. I’m a completely different person to when I started. In fact, I feel like I’ve lived many lives in one lifetime. And I really feel that I keep improving as a person as time goes on.

I want you to be able to do the same, to have the same opportunity of self-transformation. So I’d like to introduce you to a mantra and guided meditation to start you off on the path to your own ultimate experience.

The mantra is Bábá Nám Kevalam

Bábá means your inner self, your most beloved, the essence of your being. Nám means name, to identify with, to connect with. And kevalam means only. So Bábá Nám Kevalam means only to connect with, to identify with your innermost self, your most beloved self.

Now I invite you to close your eyes and take a moment to centre yourself. Focus on your sense of self. Feel the centre of yourself.

Now feel that you are completely at peace. Feel peace and happiness all around you. Feel infinite happiness all around you. Feel that your consciousness is part of a greater conscious reality surrounding you; the all-pervading blissful awareness of the entire universe. You exist within an infinite consciousness of which everything — not only you but everyone and everything — is a part. You are surrounded by that greater consciousness. It emanates out to infinity around you.

Now start to repeat the mantra, Bábá Nám Kevalam, within your mind. As you continue to repeat the mantra, feel yourself merging into and becoming one with the infinitely blissful consciousness all around you. Feel that your own sense of awareness is merging into the infinite awareness around you. Feel that your own consciousness is merging into the infinite consciousness all around you. Feel yourself becoming one with it. Feel that you are one with it. Feel that you are it. Continue like that for as long as you like.
