Whenever I have been in the USA I have felt a great connection with black people. Although they have been exploited and oppressed in that country for hundreds of years now, and right up to this day, they continue to be, on the whole, a warm, gentle and dignified race. I couldn’t help feeling, having met so many beautiful black people there, that if only they were given half a chance; if only they were given the chance to reach their full potential (through proper education and humane socio-economic rights), then they would contribute immensely to the wellbeing of America as well as the world. And it would be such a wonderful thing to see them blossom into happy, respected and valued individuals on par with anyone else in society. Of course there’s always a crossover and one can’t generalise. But the oppression of black by white in America (and Australia, to a similar and maybe even greater degree) is one generalisation that is a real and shameful scar on the history of humanity. We can do better than that. We must do better than that. We must leave the discrimination of people of colour behind us on the garbage heap of history where it belongs.
